Neo-Gothic Style and Nationalism
One side effect of the Romantic era was the nationalism that it gave rise to. For this reason, the English, the Germans, and the French all claimed the development of the original Gothic style of architecture as their own. The English did so by claiming the title “Early English” as an alternate name for the original Gothic style. Hugo, as part of his attempt to engineer support for Gothic architecture called it “the national architecture.” The German Cologne Cathedral, at its completion, was renowned as the world’s largest building of its time–a source of national pride.
