  • Apartment: an independent living unit often referred to as a flat in United Kingdom and other British-influenced regions.
  • Apartment building: a building of many storeys containing one, two or more apartments on each floor.
  • Bedsit: a British term for a self-contained room that is compactly designed with the features of an apartment.
  • Condominium: an apartment in a building in which ownership includes the unit as well as common areas of the compound.
  • Co-op: an apartment belonging to a corporation with residents owning a number shares in line with common areas.
  • Duplex: two units either side by side or on separate floors.
  • Railroad flat: a narrow apartment as wide as the car of a train with rooms built end to end.
  • Maisonette: a two-level apartment with staircase, sometimes with a street-level entrance.
  • Penthouse: the top floor of an apartment building or other building.
  • Garage-apartment: an apartment build over a garage, often with a separate entrance from the main house.
  • Mother-in-law apartment: known as a granny flat in Britain and Australia, it is a small apartment at the back of the main house or on an upper floor with its own entrance.
  • Four-plus-one: an apartment building with four floors supported by a parking lot.
  • Triple-decker: three apartments on top of each other made of frame construction.
  • Studio apartment: almost like a bedsit but with the kitchen, dining and living area all within one room, plus a bathroom.
